Trey and I got to celebrate our engagement at Bombshack 1999 when the good Dr. Juan Lara whipped out some giant cardboard wedding bells and toasted us warmly. I barely new the Laras back then and it was quite touching, made me realize that this group of Trey's friends was really more like family. Like drunk family in bathrobes. Good times!

This moment made me feel
For 5 summers running, I threw massive parties in my parents backyard, usually around early to mid-August when everyone was back from college visiting their families. We rolled in three kegs, ordered up massive amounts of Mexican food (or I worked the grill), dressed up in crazy outfits, and generally laughed long into the night. They were referred to as the 'Bombshack' parties.
Everyone was invited: my high-school fiends, college friends, water-polo teammates, archaeology colleagues, exchange students, my sisters high-school and college friends, and the guys I grew up with on Brigden road. A wild scene with representation from every part of our lives.
I have so many fond memories from these parties... for one night a year, all the orbits of all the people I knew were synced, and everyone partied like they'd known each other for years. If I can dig up the old album that has images broken out by year, I'll make 4 more moments!

58 weeks agoI still have that college shirt, and I intend to pass that along to my children who will in turn auction it for high profit online, thereby completing one of the important (and abusive) cycles of filial obligation: selling off all your parents most treasured party clothes to buy cheap wine. Er, you've done that too, right?

69 weeks agoWish I had been around...then these would have been known as the NUCLEAR (or as we say in Texas, NUKULAR) Bombshack Parties. Guess we'll just have to revisit this in retirement.
