After Greece, we traveled on to Lebanon to make a visit to my birthplace and maternal grandparents. We spent an awesome week sightseeing, being driven around by my grandparents' extremely sweet and loyal Armenian driver. They treat him very well, if you discount the lovingly hurled insults that translate to things like "Hagop, your brain is like that of a goat's", as he drove around in circles getting us lost. It's not his fault though, it's cause my grandfather forces him to stop the car every 100 feet to ask a different person for directions to the same place.
Somehow even with the direction fiasco, Hagop managed to get us all around Lebanon and we feasted our eyes on amazing ruins in Baalbek and Byblos, stalactites in the caves of Jeita, and yummy Armenian food in the small town of Anjar. Even in it's post war-torn state (and when we were there, Beirut was quite rebuilt), Beirut is one of the most beautiful and alive cities I've visited. And a week with my quirky grandparents - she's a prolific painter who swears by her 2 Marlboro Red a day habit and he a still-practicing 80 year old pulmonary doctor who eats more fruit than you'd think was possible- was a total treat. Even for Trey, who survived the night we had only watermelon and cheese for dinner.
This year my grandfather passed away. This trip was one of the few times I had with him as an adult and I'm so grateful for it. He and my grandmother treated us to an amazing week, it will always be one of my most precious memories.
Beirut was amazing, but the real treat was getting to meet and spend time with lots of Chaghig's family. We stayed with her grandparents, which ended up being a nonstop comedy routine, carried out in a combination of English and Armenian. One example from our travel journal:
We had stopped to buy some toothpaste at a store. When I received my change, I started wondering what the Lebanese coins were like.
Trey: What's the smallest denomination of Lebanese coin?
Chaghig (to Teta & Dede, in Armenian): What's the smallest Lebanese coin? Trey wants one as a souvenir.
Teta: The smallest Lebanese coin? We have 100s and 50s. I think the 50 is the smallest.
Dede: Yes, the 50 is the smallest.
Chaghig: Do you have any?
Dede (looking in his change): Yes, I have one. I have no idea what I'm going to do with it though, they're completely useless.
Chaghig (laughing): Give it to Trey!
Dede: Why? They're useless.

This one kinda freaks me out. I see the people, but it looks like a different dimension. I have never known you two not as parents.
39 weeks agothat's funny. To me it seems like a lifetime ago yet also just yesterday. I uploaded photos to Greece, Morocco, and Spain too if you want to keep freaking yourself out. I have a zillion albums of travel photos from different trips, slowly momentizing them...
39 weeks agowhere is the video!
39 weeks agoAll on videotape - need to digitize it. Some good footage of the city and other stuff on there- I think Trey shot more video than photos during this trip so hopefully we'll get it up here soon.
39 weeks agoI ordered a cable to connect our camcorder to the computer. Wish me luck.
39 weeks agoI love the pictures, Chaghig. It brings tears to my eyes seeing the people who are no longer with us. I just talked to my grandmother yesterday. She says hello.
39 weeks agothanks taline- was definitely fun reminiscing over these old photos I've been scanning. I'm so glad I had the time with both our grandparents!
39 weeks agoI just found these moments. Have you gotten a scanner yet? I want to see more pics!
45 weeks agoNot yet. I need to do that cause we have a lot of awesome travel footage that I'd like to put up. We also have hours of really cool video Trey took on his camcorder during all of our old trips - I need to take it somewhere and digitize.
45 weeks agoOk Scott I've uploaded some photos to this and Greece, am working slowly through scanning all our travels.
39 weeks agoThe technology in my life sucks. Guess how I "scanned" these photos? There's a ton more of Lebanon but I'll spare everyone the crappy resolution until my scanner fixes it's sorry self.
