After the most miserable day of skiing, and needing to just meet everyone at the car where I was sitting with no boots on and rubbing my feet to keep the swelling down, I decided it was finally time to get this problem solved. Everyone told me to get a custom insole, but what I actually found out, made me feel sick.
Since it took over an hour to get fitted for the thing, I had plenty of time to talk to the dude doing the work. He told me how the insole is great, and for $150 it better be, but that he doesn't understand why when people buy ski boots they are not told what to do. Sure you spend a long time picking out the right boot in the store, but that is just a part of the process. You are suppose to come back after your first weekend of skiing and tell the tech where all your pressure points are, so he can blow the boot out in the right places. "How do you think those plastic, rigid things are going to fit every person?" When I asked how much it cost, he told me $20 per boot. I then vomited on his head and passed out. After the smelling salts I told him where it hurt and he kept my boots and told me to come back tomorrow to get them. Then come back after I am done this weekend for any fine tuning. No extra charge.
I have been in such pain for 3.5 years every weekend of winter with these boots because, "That is just how ski boots are.".
I still got the insole, because you can use it in any shoe, and it was a really interesting process, but the widening of the plastic is where the magic will lie for this weekend.

Finally skied on these last weekend. It wasn't the mind blowing experience I thought it would be, but it was better and I felt like I had more control. I really noticed how much more Arch support I had. I need to take them back in for a little more blow out, but this time I marked the exact spot, so after that, they should be perfect.
53 weeks agolol - I haven't skied in over 20 yrs, but damn I remember how those boots hurt. Of course, back then the weren't made of plastic, but more rigid wood as I recall.
55 weeks agoOne of these days I'll take the kids skiing, so this tip is much appreciated!
I just got my boots molded for the first time in Whistler.
56 weeks agoI did not know that there was more to it then heating the boot and putting them on for a few minutes, so I brought my 2 year old Mina with me. It turns out you have to stand in these fake ski binding for 10 minutes with you weight forward in your boots so they form to your shins. Rather then having Mina destroy the store while I trapped in "the boots of fire", I stood with Mina on my shoulder for the hottest 10 minutes of my life.
Lets hope it pays off for both of us next time we ski : )
I am starting to feel a little sick myself.
