It's open! And it's everything we hoped it would be. I just walked over and bought milk, tomatoes, peanut butter, and frozen enchiladas. I've actually been there every day since it opened, for different odds and ends. This time I remembered to bring a camera though.

When we heard news that the old Kragen Autoparts mini-mall a couple blocks away was going to be torn down and replaced with a Trader Joe's, I figured it was too good to be true. Then we heard there was a big petition to stop the project, led by concerned Berkeley citizens with nothing better to protest than tasty, nutritious food for good prices. Fortunately, there was an equally enthusiastic movement to support the idea, and the city council board of building permits approved the application.
At this point, Trader Joe's is one of the only places we drive on a regular basis, so if it really does move in two blocks away, we'll hardly ever need the car....

23 weeks agoMore photos added. I'm very glad to be walking distance to this place--but even more glad I'm not next door.
59 weeks agoConstruction has resumed! (see photos) This is an irrefutable sign that the worst is behind us. Wasabi peas here we come!
68 weeks agoTrader Joe's in Berkeley means a few less visits to Tati's house on the way back from the El Cerrito run. Boo hoo. Not surprised by Ted's news. Who can eat wasabi peas in times like these??? Do you think they are going to institute the ever famous "1 student at a time" rule that the 3 blocks around Berkeley High are famous for?

Don't worry, I'm gonna come live in your kitchen.
80 weeks agoGood! We can't wait to roll out the air mattress and cram it in under the table.
80 weeks agoGiven who MOVED the mattress, seems to me Walkers should get a one up from the air bed...
78 weeks agoYou're right, after Trey's big show he can have any bed he wants. (We can't wait to have a playdate with Sevan, Karek, and Thurston at the new pad!)
78 weeks agoSeriously on that play date! Let us know if you need anything to get settled! We love that neighborhood you're in...
78 weeks agoI know something about having a TradersJoe's walking distance. As the only store I shope for grocery I love the convenience.
81 weeks agoTrey I have a feeling you guys in Berkeley are in competition with South of Lake in Pasadena..Did you know that An Elephant Pharmacy will open soon a block from Mezmama.
Oh, you didn't hear--our Elephant Pharmacy went out of business last week. Bad economy! So I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for the Pasadena branch. We're very sad--it was a great store.
81 weeks agoHey, Trey, I was talking to an electrician buddy yesterday who knows the electrical contractor on the Trader Joe's building, and he said that the developer has slowed construction to a crawl. Why? Because of the economy and real estate prices -- upon the moment of completion, the building would be worth less than the amount of the loans . . . Oops, so they are hoping the economy will catch up with their financing - oy! Ted
81 weeks agoWhat's next, Ted? You have something you want to tell me about Santa Claus?
